Martin’s Leaving Message

So the lovely Martin Hawksey ALT’s Chief Innovation, Technology and Community Officer is leaving ALT Association for Learning Technology this week … I am afraid still completely in denial that he is going … I will miss him so much as a member of our little team at ALT and my go-to person for pretty much most computer-ee type stuff …. I have known Martin since about 2014 and was completely in awe of him when undertaking the OCTEL (Open Course in TEL) course at ALT. Little did I know at that time that I would eventually be lucky enough to work with Martin as part of the ALT Team. I have got to know Martin quite well since then. I first got to know him more closely in 2015 when delivering the OER15 Conference in Cardiff. I was the Project Manager for the OER Wales Initiative back then and …

#OEGlobal20

Thanks to funding from the amazing folks at GO-GN I have been able to attend OE Global conference this week. I have always wanted to go to this conference but have been unable so this is a great opportunity. I appreciate that others would not have had this opportunity so I hope that by blogging about it that it might be of some interest. Big Conference : Big Choices It is a BIG conference, on all week with pretty much what seemed to me like 24 hour sessions with all the various time zones. There has clearly been a LOT of planning and effort behind the scenes to pull it all together. They have paid a great deal of attention to the online networking aspect with an area called OE Global Connect based on Discourse. I even got to earn badges for doing stuff ( gaining a badge is always …

What a difference a year makes …

It’s been a funny old week … I’ve been on annual leave this week, my aim was to spend some time with the kids before they go back to school next week and recharge my batteries following our superb online summer summit #altcSummit last week … unfortunately having broken a couple of teeth during lockdown has meant that I have had a fair bit of dental misery this week so have been pretty much nursing my wounds (literally) and feeling sorry for myself most of the week rather than actually recharging … hey ho … that’s the way the cookie crumbles … Anyhow, being on leave meant that I missed the actual one year anniversary of my move to ALT on 1st September 2019 last year but I thought it would be interesting (to say the least) to reflect back over the last 12months. September 2019 I left my old …

Collaborative Open Quilting across Time and Space …

I am absolutely delighted to have contributed a collaborative quilt square ‘Visualising The Global Heart of Go-Gn’ with the lovely Kathy Essmiller (@kathyessmiller) for the amazing #FemEdTechQuilt for #OER20 … The call for contributions was issued by Frances Bell to ‘create a quilt that can inspire during and after its creation; acknowledge all contributions and their history; and make a difference to Care and Justice in Education and Technology contexts’ (via #Femedtech) This is a warm and inclusive invitation to participate in the process of creating a Quilt of Care and Justice, that will be developed with the help of the Femedtech community and others over the next few months. The quilt will be completed and displayed at the OER20 Conference in April 2020. Kathy and I met through the #GO_GN network and decided to collaborate on a square. This meant collaborating across timezones in the USA ( where Kathy is based) …

2019 Review

I’m so bad at doing these. Other people seem to get theirs done so quickly. I did manage to sort of do one of these last year and it was definitely  helpful in terms of a reminder of what on earth I actually did across the year, so I thought I would have another go this year. January We had an absolutely brilliant time organising and delivering at #SocmedHE18 Social Media for Learning in Higher Education Conference in Nottingham in January. We were slightly delayed as it normally runs before Christmas but it was still so good ! Seemingly I actually managed to write a short blog post on the train on the way there … Check out the Programme Here I also managed to do some scribbles … My Lovely Friend Sue Beckingham did an excellent summary of #SocmedHE18 and the day’s events on her blog … February March …

#OER19, #GO-GN – Hope, Care and Happiness

Well, here we are back from the joys at #OER19 in the most excellent setting of Galway ! I had such a lovely time in Galway – a really tiring time I must add but it was still super brilliant to be in such amazing company, meet old and new friends and generally have an all-round wonderful week. I arrived in Galway on Saturday 6th April 2019 having received funding from the wonderful Global Graduate Network. Despite being on the OER Conference Committee,  I’m really not sure I would have made it to Galway without this support and I cannot thank the Go-Gn’ers enough for the opportunity.  This is such an excellent network and I feel I have now made some friends for life – united in our PhD escapades! A solid start to day two, as we continue to build bridges and traverse tunnels as early career open researchers …

#SocMEDHE Nottingham 9 Jan 2019

So, I’ve been part of the organising committee for the 2018 edition of the Social Media in Higher Education conference [ yes I know it’s now 2019 and we missed the usual pre Christmas and festive jumper wearing antics but we are going with it for now … there will follow a 2019 edition back in its usual slot towards the end of year…. ) I’m currently on my way to Nottingham via train …. I’m really looking forward to catching up with everyone tonight in advance of what promises to be a fabulous event tomorrow ! It has been such a joy to be part of this committee, a group of volunteer educators from eleven different HE institutions across the UK that have given up their time, energy and enthusiasm to create an event / conference / gathering / festival ( we came up with many definitions of what …
